Avante Care & Support is a Registered Charity supporting over 1000 older people through our registered nursing and dementia care homes and home care services.

As Head Cook you will build a kitchen to be proud of. You will lead, train and manage a dedicated team of kitchen staff to deliver meals and snacks, ensuring our residents enjoy well-cooked, nutritious and beautifully presented food, ensuring all food hygiene, and health & safety regulations are observed and to consider ethnic origins and religious convictions.

You will be reliable, friendly and professional. Further, you will be a team player with great communication skills and a flexible approach to work.

Main Duties

1. Plan, prepare and cook nutritious meals from fresh/core ingredients, ensuring it is prepared in safe and clean conditions. Oversee staff to carry out this task.

2. Plan menus that provide high quality nutrition and choice.

3. Implement catering regulations in respect of hygiene and Health and Safety procedures.

4. Order food, drink and other commodities that meet the catering requirements

5. Checking deliveries against all orders placed, together with stock control

6. Monitor and control catering budget and costings,

7. Manage and monitor staff performance and provide an initial induction programme to new cooks joining Avante across the homes, ensuring understanding of relevant Avante policy and procedures and to be available as mentor and provide leadership support to all cooks in Avante homes.

Essential Experience/Skills

• Experience of running a catering service, including team management skills

• A City & Guilds or equivalent qualification

• Knowledge & understanding of the issues involved in catering for the elderly, including their special dietary requirements

• Environmental Health Certificate in Food Hygiene

Desirable Experience/Skills

• A good understanding of different cultural and ethnic traditions with regard to catering
