New Year Honours: MBE for Managing Director of Stepahead Support, Carolyn McVittie

On 1st January 2018 Carolyn McVittie, received an MBE for her dedicated work managing Avante Care & Support’s young people and families support service Stepahead Support.

Carolyn joined Avante Care & Support in 2001.  She started as a Keyworker at ‘Breakthrough’ managing a caseload of young people and families, supporting them to achieve positive outcomes in their lives.

In 2004 Carolyn took up the post of temporary Senior Keyworker at Breakthrough to support and advise keyworkers whilst holding her own caseload. Later in 2004, Carolyn was promoted to Team Manager. As well as managing a caseload, Carolyn took the lead in setting up a new Breakthrough service in Ashford including recruitment, marketing and supervision.

In 2005 Carolyn was promoted to Manager of the Breakthrough service and was responsible for the operational delivery of the young people and family service. Carolyn ensured that contract compliance and quality standards were met.

In 2007, following a restructure, Carolyn became the General Manager of the Moving Forward and Breakthrough services. Whilst managing a significant change for staff, she had a key responsibility to consolidate a strategy to continue the expansion of the services and oversee day to day operations. Carolyn led in all staff matters including recruitment, supervision and appraisal.

In 2009, following a restructure and name change for the service, Carolyn’s role changed to

Managing Director of Stepahead Support. Her key role was to develop and grow the Stepahead Support division, and during her time 15 services have been commissioned across Kent, Bexley and Medway

During Carolyn’s time in management 15 services have been commissioned across Kent, Bexley and Medway including family mediation and support, a counselling service, supported accommodation, youth clubs and homelessness prevention.

It is impossible to put an accurate figure on the how many people have been supported in their lives by Stepahead Support, but it is in excess of 25,000.

Sadly, due to the significant changes in funding, March 2017 saw the closure of the Stepahead Support service. It was with deep regret that Avante Care & Support had to close the service.

The legacy of the support that has been provided will, however, live on through the lives of the children, young people and families supported by Stepahead Support for generations to come and this is all thanks to Carolyn and her team.

It was a pleasure to work with Carolyn during her time at Avante Care & Support; her commitment and passion to improving lives for young people was evident in all that she did. Avante Care & Support’s Board of Trustees and the Management Team are proud to congratulate Carolyn on this momentous achievement, which recognises her hard work and dedication.Debbie Pert, Finance Director & Deputy Managing Director
