Happy Holidays with Amherst Court
Amherst Court care home based in Chatham, Kent, is rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. Amherst Court has become a hub of activity and engagement with the residents all lead by the forward thinking staff team.
Recently residents Julia, Paul, Edna and Brian were supported by staff to take a four day holiday to Leysdown, Sheerness at Warden Springs Caravan Park. The residents had been involved in every part of the holiday planning including destination, duration and activities for their time away, tailored all around the resident’s requests and wishes.
Marie Taylor, Activity Coordinator said, ‘The residents couldn’t wait to set off on their hols, we headed straight to Leysdown. A Fish and chip tea we visited the penny arcades. Paul and Edna really enjoyed this with them both recalling visits to seaside resorts for an ice cream and a flutter on the slot machines.
After a breakfast of American pancakes, we took a country drive to Minster Beach to meet up with Pilgrims View care home residents and staff for a picnic. Julia particularly enjoyed this day, especially feeding the seagulls and telling us stories about her time living by the coast.
On our way back we chose ingredients for dinner - barbecued meats, salad, couscous, potatoes and halloumi. Everyone ate so well and Edna commented, "It's lovely, I’ve got so much variety on my plate, I’m enjoying every mouthful!”
The following day also included a trip to the Nature Reserve,
followed by a visit to Jackson Wood Vintage Tea Rooms to enjoy afternoon tea. Brian loved the tea rooms commenting, ‘How nice it was to be on holiday together with such wonderful food!’
The residents were clearly having a lovely time. Everyone was eating well and sleeping well and it was obvious the holiday was having a positive impact on all four residents’ health and wellbeing.
The day was wrapped up with a visit to the clubhouse to take part in the weekly quiz night. The events manager knew we were coming so he made sure the quiz was written to include everyone.
We then split into three teams and the competition began. Paul enjoyed his Fosters, Edna her Guinness and Julia her Gin! It got quite competitive at times, but it was full of laughter and Julia was so proud when she won. And what a great ending to our holiday!
