Finding the right care home for a loved one living with dementia
Avante Care & Support has provided care and support for over 26 years across Kent & Bexley. Avante Care & Support is a not for profit organisation and owns and operates 9 dementia care homes. The charity also provides a home care and support service delivering care and support into people’s homes.
There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed.
Many people with dementia move into a care home once their dementia progresses to a certain stage. Some people with dementia have other illnesses or disabilities that make it difficult for them to remain at home*.
Searching for a care home is not something any of us do every day. Often if the time does come, it can be quite stressful for all involved. When Sylvia was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2013, her family found themselves in a situation where a care home that provided 24hr dementia care was the only option to ensure Sylvias safety.
Sylvias Son-In-Law spoke openly to Avante Care & Support about his experience of looking for the right care home for his beloved Mother-In Law.
“It had been evident for a long time that mum had been suffering from a condition that was totally unfamiliar to her family. Sylvia is my wife’s mother and had always been an active and sociable person. Sylvia, in her late 80s lived alone in a retirement apartment but with frequent visits and support from her daughter and two sons.
By 2016, matters had progressed and she could no longer do everyday things such as shopping, cooking and even washing and dressing. A part time carer was found by the family but it became apparent that constant, 24-hour help was needed as Sylvia was not sleeping and was suffering from paranoia.
The effects on the family cannot be overstated and apart from the physical needs, there was the emotional hurt and feelings of guilt that it could not fully cope with the situation.”
