Amherst Court’s 50 mile sponsored walk

Staff and residents at Amherst Court care home will be pulling on their walking boots and fancy dress and heading off for a 50 mile walk on the Saxon Shore Way path from Medway to Dover on the 15, 26 June and 5 July.  The walk will raise valuable funds for the home to invest in the gardens surrounding the home for residents to enjoy.

Ashley Haydon, Home Manager at Amherst Court said, ‘The Saxon Shore Way is a long distance path that traces the South East coast as it was in Roman times. It starts in Gravesend and finishes 163 miles later in Hastings. We have chosen the route as it passes through many areas of significance for our residents, most of whom have spent their lives living, working and holidaying in Kent. We will begin our 50 miles in Medway as we are a Medway care home, walking through the seaside towns of Kent, and our last day will finish at the White Cliffs of Dover. The walks will be broken down over three days for residents and staff to choose where they would like to walk and the distance. Some residents will join in for a short while; some staff will walk the full 50 miles’.

The idea of a 50 mile walk came after staff attended a three day programme to become Associates of the Eden Alternative. The Eden Alternative is based on the core belief that ageing should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline.

The training supports staff to focus on how they could make a positive difference to the lives of the people they care for and support. Staff are encouraged to think creatively with activities that allow residents to be able to achieve goals that may have felt were unreachable.

The care home in Palmerston Road, Chatham, has had an innovative approach when it comes to activities and trips out with residents, which in the past have included Diggerland, Teapot Island and B&Q for wood-work workshops.

This was one of the reasons Amherst Court was the first care home in Medway to be recognised as an Outstanding home by the CQC and has retained this accreditation for over 4 years.
