Amherst Court care home re-accredited as an Eden Alternative home
On Thursday 11th January Amherst Court care home in Chatham was reaccredited as an Eden Alternative home. The Manager at the home is an Eden Associate and the Care Manager has been an Eden Associate for over nine years.
The Eden Alternative is based on the core belief that ageing should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline.
Studies show that implementation of The Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving quality of life and quality of care for those living in care homes. Also, homes that have adopted Eden as an organisational-wide philosophy have found that there is improved staff satisfaction and retention and significant decreases in use of medication.
The Eden assessors said relationships between residents and staff were observed as being relaxed and friendly and residents were seen interacting well with each other.
Amherst Court is a very popular home and well supported in the local community as demonstrated by the recent fund raising projects which enabled the home to buy a Tovertafel; an award-winning innovation from the Netherlands, a country renowned for its cutting-edge approach to dementia care. The technology contains a series of games to be projected onto a hard flat surface for people living with mid to late stage dementia.
Amherst Court is also well supported by the family members of residents who attend regular events that take place at the home, including the popular cinema evening when residents invite their loved ones to join them for a film night. Animals are warmly welcomed by residents at the home. There are budgerigars on Charlotte lounge, cats, fish and Sam the dog comes in every day with the Assistant Manager.
The Eden report states ‘All staff spoken to during the visit demonstrated that the Eden philosophy is one they subscribed to as the basis for their practice. Education on the theory behind the practice, for those recently trained as Eden Associates, has enhanced their understanding and their enthusiasm which was very evident as an indication of success for their future Eden journey’.
