Parkview care home has been recognised for its commitment to supporting vibrant and fulfilling lives for people living with dementia
Parkview care home in the London Borough of Bexley, have recently renewed their commitment to implementing the Eden Alternative philosophy. The home has been presented with an ‘Eden Tree’ plaque and certificate in recognition of being included on the Eden Alternative UK Register of Homes.
The Eden Alternative is based on the core belief that ageing should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline.
Parkview care home was assessed on 3rd January 2018, by June Burgess, Regional Co-ordinator and Paul Bailey, Eden Mentor & Educator who form the validation team for the Eden Alternative in the UK. They spent the day observing the character of the home and speaking with residents and staff.
Studies show that implementation of The Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving quality of life and quality of care for those living in care homes. Also, homes that have adopted Eden as an organisational-wide philosophy have found that there is improved staff satisfaction and retention and significant decreases in use of medication.
Pat Collis, Home Manager said: “We are very proud of the achievement. The staff and residents have made it happen. The staff’s dedication to person-centred care can be seen throughout the home, with a strong emphasis on Parkview’s Philosophy of Care, to address the issues of helplessness, loneliness and boredom.
Many residents at Parkview like to take part in the day trips out of the home and the themed activities within the home such as in August last year residents took part in a two week summer ‘Staycation’. The summer holiday was brought to all the residents at the home with activities including a Spa day, BBQ party, outdoor cinema night, picnic on the beach with our very own sandy beach with sandcastles plus many more holiday themed events. The events allowed residents the opportunity to socialise with residents from other homes in the area and other community members, including the Mayor of Bexley.
The addition of Rosie the dog to the home has also been a huge success and a good loyal companion to many of the residents, as well as a good form of exercise taking Rosie out for walks’.
The Eden report states ‘Residents are definitely at the centre of care and are given the opportunity to be part of daily decision-making both in respect of personal choice and communal activities’.
